Health Insurance

Health insurance helps to protect your health and finances by lowering the cost of medical emergencies, ongoing treatments, routine care, and unexpected health problems. When you pay regular premiums, you get coverage for hospital stays, medical procedures, diagnostic tests, and other healthcare costs.

Overview

Health insurance is a financial contract that covers your medical and surgical expenses in exchange for a regular premium payment. It shields you from sudden, high healthcare costs by paying the hospital directly (cashless) or reimbursing your out-of-pocket medical bills.

Types of Health Insurance Plans

  • Individual Plan: Covers medical costs for a single person.Family
  • Floater: Covers the whole family under one single pool of sum insured.
  • Senior Citizen Plan: Tailored for individuals over 60 with age-related coverages.
  • Critical Illness Plan: Pays a lump sum upon diagnosis of serious illnesses like cancer.
  • Top-Up / Super Top-Up: Provides extra backup coverage after your base policy limit is exhausted

What is Standardly Covered?

  • In-patient Hospitalisation: Room rent, ICU charges, nursing, and doctor fees.
  • Pre & Post Hospitalisation: Medical expenses from 30–60 days before admission to 90–180 days after discharge.
  • Daycare Procedures: Minor surgeries requiring less than 24 hours of hospitalisation (e.g., cataracts).
  • Road Ambulance: Emergency transit charges to the nearest hospital.
  • AYUSH Treatments: Alternative medicines like Ayurveda or Homeopathy.

Critical Catch-Points to Check Before Buying

  • Room Rent Limit: Look for plans with "No Room Rent Cap" to avoid unexpected proportionate deduction penalties during claims.
  • Co-payment: Ensure there is no clause forcing you to pay a fixed percentage (e.g., 10% or 20%) of every single claim out of your pocket.
  • Waiting Periods: Check how long you must wait before the policy covers pre-existing conditions like diabetes or thyroid (typically 1 to 4 years).
  • Restoration Benefit: Ensure the policy automatically refills your sum insured if it gets exhausted within the policy year.
